You may have heard of the concept of Feng Shui and how this ancient Chinese practice be used in your home’s decor to make it a happier, luckier, healthier place to be but how much do you actually know about how to put into practice - especially if you really do not have too much extra money to spare to pay for major redecorating?

Feng Shui revolves around the principle of encouraging a flow of good chi - energy - and in the case of decor that means bringing in as much good chi as possible while trying to avoid attracting negative energy that may cause disruptions and (according to Feng Shui principles) even cause trouble in personal relationships between the people living in the home.

There are five basic elements in Feng Shui. Each has a different meaning and each is represented by a different color. That means that if you choose the wrong color for certain room in your home according to Feng Shui you may be causing many of your own problems! The five elements and their associated colors are as as follows:

The Wood Element = Dark Green

The Fire Element = Red

The Water Element = Blue

The Earth Element = Browns and Yellows

The Metal Element = White, Gold and Silver

The actual principles of Feng Shui are rather complicated and those serious about the subject will need to study it to practice it properly. There are however some basic things you can learn about the colors in your home decor to tell you if you are on the right track.

For example the fire element - represented by anything red - signifies energy, activity, and warmth while the metal element - represented by whites, silvers and golds - signifies power and control (great for a home office). So red elements in an active room like the kitchen may be a great idea but in the bedroom, which is supposed to be a nice quiet place, it is probably not the best idea, as well as for bathroom.

In fact for the bedroom the water element is best because it signifies spirituality, peace and harmony. In rooms where a mixture of activities take place - the living room for example earth and wood elements are considered best as they signify wellbeing, friendship and prosperity.
