Indoor Plants Winter Preparation

Autumn has come and it may even seem that winter is close in some areas. Indoor plants do not differ from people and are also sensitive to a seasonal transition. As you prepare for winter period, do not forget about your indoor plants. They also need to be protected when cold season arrives. Though they are in warmth of the house cyclical changes affect them too.

The majority of indoor plants do not grow fast in this season. This is a rest period for them therefore do not expect speedy growth during that time, and do not stimulate growth with fertilizer. The days become shorter and this factor influences growth as all plants require much light. Take care about them at this time and provide supplemental light. If there is not enough natural light, then you can involve light from reading lamps. But the best source of light will be fluorescent lights characterized by broad spectrum light.

Take into consideration the requirements of each plant. Some of them require affluent watering while others do not. Watch how dry the soil is and do not follow the schedule automatically. There are plants that need high level of humidity that may be needed to cope with heat in the house. Such indoor plants can be frequently taken to the bathroom because they like it.

Autumn is a peak growth season for some indoor plants. Consequently, the requirements are different as well in comparison with common indoor plants. You should prepare for blooming of such plants as Poinsettias, Christmas cactus and Amaryllis in advance. If you have Poinsettias you should know that they need much lighting otherwise they do not bloom.
