if you want your furniture not to fade and to be of natural color, it should be sealed with a special sealer. Growth of mildew and mold are also prevented using it.
as for wrought patio furniture, it needs sanding to avoid appearance of rust. Then it is wiped carefully and coated with a primer. If there are no signs of corrosion, usual cleaning with soapy water will be enough.
